03/23/2003 Archived Entry: "Frust Icon"
WOW. That was just about the longest time its ever taken to do something so simple. I added a "favicon" to my site. Favicon stands for FAVourites ICON. Its the icon that shows up beside your address in the address bar and when you bookmark a page.
First I drew the icon in paint and tried to convert it to ICO format, no go. Joe and I ended up trying 4 different programs but none of them would do it. So I downloaded a shareware program (IconCOOL Editor) to do it in.
I uploaded it to my site, and expected the icon to just show up since thats what I read would happen. Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy. I added this piece of HTML to the meta tag: <link REL="shortcut icon" HREF="http://rayne.woot.net/favicon.ico" TYPE="image/x-icon"> but the icon shows up wrong! It showed only the bottom left corner for some reason?!?!
A bit more fiddling around with sizes and colour pallettes didn't do anything good. I upload a comletely different icon and delete the old one and still nothing changes. So obviously the browser cached the icon somewhere and wouldn't replace it even though I kept pressing refresh. Ridiculous. In any case, it shows up fine now, but I still don't know why it was only showing the bottom left corner before.
If you've got a website, I recommend you add a favicon, it's a nice touch of peronalization. I'm sure it won't take the absurd amount of time to do it that it took me.
