07/01/2003 Archived Entry: "Happy Canada Day Everyone!"

I'll be heading out to The Hill with some (probably drunken) friends for the night time festivities and fireworks!

What's everyone else doing? What's a non-Ottawa Canada Day like?

I'll spend the afternoon doing school work and will check out the fireworks by Columbia Lake at night. I think Cora's dragging me around the pre-fireworks events to ask for donations for the university (since it's a free event).

I'm doing my first duty as a first aid attendant at Gyro Park in the morning and then I'm working a split shift at the theatre. All my friends are going to watch the fireworks I think...

Well, us non-ottawains will first drag our asses out of bed. We will ponder our non-ontarian existance and decide if today is worth loosing 12 hours of potential sleep recovery time. It will then dawn on us somewhere half way between the sink and toilet that it's canada's birthday and as a result we dont have to work. Friggin A Canada! However seeing as how we are now within pissing distance of the toilet, we at least celebrate the occasion while takeing advantage of the oppertunity provided. Once all appropriate measures have been taken, we shall promptly return to bed and ponder what the day after canada day will be like.

Oh yeah, I'm getting my weapons licencing done today at 4:00pm. Not only can I buy more rediculusly dangerous objects but these ones will be legal, patriotic eh?

Don't have to work huh? You gonna tell Melissa that I'm not coming in today?

You know you're sitting close enough to the fireworks when you occasionally have ash rain down on you.

Weapons licensing at 4pm? As if anyone is open for that kind of thing on July 1st.

Fifteen minutes of fireworks with 300 000 people. Nuts!

The fireworks never seemed to finish, lol! the ending was very impressive, but the 10 first minutes were a bit boring, with an obvious lack of tempo. they should have made it only 10 minutes long and more action-packed!

I'm also glad i could meet your friends yesterday! very nice people! :P
I think i preffered hanging at Pat's house (and drinking sake) than standing in the sea of people in front of the parliement!

Btw, how was the celebration downtown afterwards? i'm sorry i couldn't join you, we were very tired..

I too felt that the fireworks kinda...drifted...in the middle. They need better choreography.

We went to OnTap, saw the HUGE lineup and didn't go in. We basically walked around for a long time.

Actually the weapons inspector is a friends father so it worked out, little expencive but at least it's legal now. Our fireworks were an hour late, and it was windy....

At least we had them this year!

I have to say I quite enjoyed the fireworks this year. I got a good spot and Jill took a few pictures, hopefully they will turn out. Other than that it was pretty much a lazy day for me.

i got up at 9:30, and went downtown by myself. i planned on looking for people i knew, and hanging out with them. and i succeeded! i found people, and hung out with them the rest of the day.

the fireworks i thought weren't all that impressive. i mean, they didn't even turn off the lights on parliament hill to make the fireworks light up the sky. and part of the show was obscurred by the parliament building themselves. *sigh* i've been more impressed with renfrew fireworks i think.

The fireworks are usually better viewed by the river or on the other side of the river (hull). The museum of civilizations gives an amazing vantage point.

What kind of stuff do hey have in that museum, Thai?

Posted by Romer @ 07/05/2003 02:20 PM EST

The museum is of pre-modern canadian cultures. Native Americans, Metis, umm...I can't remember much else, the place is huge tho, so I'm sure theres more than just those 2 exhibits; i just can't recall any of it.
