As I’ve mentioned before, my knowledge of music is pretty shallow. As I hear more and more songs, my appreciation for the songs in the Simpsons diminishes. At one point I believed that all the music on that show was original material and I thought it was really great, now I realize that most of the music I’ve enjoyed from that show is a parody of an older song or just the characters singing a known song. What huge disappointment! The Simpsons is pretty much a cultural commentary so I guess it makes sense that their songs are based on popular music but still it shattered my illusion that it was all original.

Some of the real songs that I’ve recently discovered riffed by the show are Jazzman by Carole King, Mandy by Barry Manilow, Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkle, the Cheers theme song, and Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves by Cher.

WOW!...as if you didn't know that!...I even gathered that from the limited amount of Simpsons episodes I've seen...
