The Long Road
12/02/2003 Archived Entry: "You know what I really like?"
Snow. Snow is so cool, its like a magical substance that falls from the sky every year at that time when snow is supposed to come down. Rain and hail are cool, but not MAGICAL. Rain is just evaporated water that's condensed in the clouds and hail is frozen rain...but snow, I have no clue how snow works. Snow is like magic to me and I'd much rather have it that way. I love going to sleep one night with the world looking normal and waking up the next morning (ie: afternoon) to see everything covered in a beautiful layer of pure white.
Snow makes me want to go run outside not wearing a jacket and roll around on the ground, build forts, throw snowballs and come back in shivering with a mug of hot chocolate. I haven't done any of that in a long time but sometimes the desire to do it is still there.
Snow brings up wonderful visions of being curled up in a blanker beside a fireplace with a good book or chatting with others because its too cold to go outside.
Snow also brings back memories of ski trips with my friends which I haven't gone on in a LONG time. Its been years since I've gone skiing, I think I'll definately try to go once or twice this year if I can. Hopefully I remember how and knees and ankles will be able to take the strain!
More than anything, I think snow reminds me of school being closed and long lazy mornings lying in bed doing nothing. Ah, those are always good memories.

I never thought I'd say this... You're making me miss northern Alberta. Most of my early life was snow covered. So many of my early memories involve it. It used to be "Pure White" for 6 - 8 months a year. Living in BC now I rarely see snow for more then a few weeks and never in any volume. I miss all the things I used to do in it. I, on multiple occasions, sledded down the pitch of a third story roof vaulted into 11 feet of freefall through the chilly morning air to be consumed by a 6 foot bank of fresh powder. Memories...

We used to get more snow here than we have in the last few years. I remember a time when there was always tons of snow covering everything in our complex. We made jumps at the bottom of the Big Hill and then sprayed it with water. After it had frozen overnight we'd pack it with more snow and then go sledding all afternoon. We'd get a lot of air time with some of these jumps. Many a day did I go home with a bruised butt from landing hard after a particularly good jump.
I think I'm gonna go have some hot chocolate now...:)

snow in the city isn't as nearly as fun as snow in the country. does anyone know where there's a good toboganning hill in toronto? the city seems to flat. it's something i'm going to definitely have to explore.

The one thing I really miss about the winter is street hockey. You can still do it in the summer, but it's just not the same. It's always to hot, and falling on the ground is alot more painful on summer sement than on a winter blanket of snow. I remember every night on the weekends and after school I would always be down the street playing hockey with friends. Nowadays it's much harder to get people out for a game of "street shinny". Playing on public outdoor rinks is always great too, but you always get those NHL wannabe's trying to show off, and the game seems to be alot more competative. As you get older, street hockey seems alot more of a child's activity than that of a university student. I think that is so wrong. I think everyone should get some friends together for a friendly game...once exams are over of course.

My new house, in Ottawa, is close to the Conroy Pitt, which is a big hole near this bike/hike trail. It looks pretty cool but I haven't been around during a winter to check it out yet. Its apparently a big toboganning spot. Who wants to come along?
I'll play hockey with you Dougman, I'll be back on the 19th.
