03/22/2004 Archived Entry: "So the story goes"
We were at Phil's (a really trashy place that serves 1.75$ drinks), sharing a table with a bunch of hot girls. One of them, very obviously drunk, sits beside Joe and begins introducing herself to everyone and then asks Shawn to go dancing. They come back and go a few times. At one point the girl has her hotter friend sit on her lap and they tease us for an infinitely long time by almost making out.
The last time she came back to the table she talked to us again and I asked her what her name was, not really catching it the first time. Sherry? no. Carrey? no. Dairy? no. She makes a 'T' with her hands so I say "Terry?". Yes. "A very manly name", I reply (this is the direction my sense of humour tends to skew for those who don't know). Terry gives me the finger and a look of daggers. So of course I run with the joke, digging myself a deeper and deeper hole. At one point Dennis makes a joke, which may or may not have had anything to do with Terry, and I laugh so she reaches across the table and punches me in the mouth. I think I was looking at Dennis at the time, if not then that's my excuse for taking the hit.
As she sits back down I pull her arm forwards to throw her off balance (something Karate taught I should have done as she was punching, but nevermind that). The bouncer comes by and starts talking to her. I figure I'd get ejected cuz I provoked her, she's a hot chick, and he wasn't talking to me. But she's the one who got kicked out! YAY! Shawn went with her but then he came back and I told him he should have left with her and he says the bouncer didn't let him. Afterwards, a couple said the girl was probably bi since she was offering to buy drinks for a bunch of girls (that and the blatant display of almost-making-out mentioned earlier, and the groping that was happening on the dance floor).
A bit later, I went to talk to the ejected girl's friends. They didn't leave with her so it was kinda fishy. So I got the scoop on her. Turns out, she wasn't actually a friend but someone who just happened to live in the same building that they invited to Phil's and she was 27 years old and a stripper for the Huther (sp?) Hotel. I joked that I should go watch her but they informed me that Saturday would be her last performance for a while since she'd be going out on tour.
So what's the moral of this story kids? If you want to get picked up by a 27 year old bisexual stripper and possibly live out your wildest fantasies then don't bring me along!

The story's not as climatic as I envisioned it...at least "Batman" didn't get knocked out by the punch...NOW THAT would have been a story!!...:P
Look at it this way, you saved Shawn from STDs...;)

Nah, it was too awkward of a position (leaning over a table) to throw the punch with enough power to knock someone out. Plus she'd have to go for the chin and not the teeth. It still hurt, chalice!

the heuther has strippers? huh?
i'm ever so confused
Posted by melpie @ 03/22/2004 02:31 PM EST
yes, the heuther has a variety of establishments inside. One of which apparently involves strippers.
Barley Works and The Lion's Den are the ones where I have been. Good Beer!

yes, there are many places inside there, and one of them (not sure which) has strippers a couple of nights a week. Not every night of the week though. I was under the impression is was a pretty amatuer thing though...but I've never been so who am I to say, I suppose.

is there such thing as a "professional" status in stripping? i'm really unfamiliar with the whole thing ...
yeah, i've been to the barley works and lion's den .... no stripping there (when i was there at least) ... but they were doing all those renovations in the summer ... hmmmm ...

I've never been to any place like that, but I've read a few articles on the topic, so I'll throw in what I know:
In the woman's realm of the adult entertainment industry (stripping, porn, and in some rare areas, prostitution), the pinacle of a career is becoming a big-name porn star.
These women do not typically make their money from the movie itself, but from travelling to the strip-clubs across the country. The clubs that feature a highly recognizable porn-star will draw a large crowd, and it's apparantly not unheard of to make thousands of dollars in a single night for these big-ticket porn stars. Coupled with merchandise (visit the back of the Stag Shop to get an idea), they can rake in a hefty sum in their prime.
Of course, this only lasts while they're young, and by 35 they will no longer be directly working in the business. This is why they try to make as much money as they can while they are popular.
Of course, for the few big-name stars, there are many more wannabes. They either move up the strip-club ladder, or more typically get into the porn business. It's apparantly extremely competitive, and hard to get to the top.
The male side is supposedly even more competitive, but men have a longer shelf-life then their female counterparts.
The business side of things is even more interesting, but entirely off-topic, so I'll save it for the story where someone gets punched by a porn empire king.

i wanna talk about porn empires now though!
we did a business case on porn in ethics class ... i think the prof just did it for shock value ... as a business case, i didn't find it particularly valuable ... or for what the point of that specific case was ...

i don't know about porn as a business, but the people who work in it are very... interesting.
I don't think at all like them, and yet there are times when I can appreciate and even sympathize with their views...
Often the porn business is closely associated with technology as they are often the first ones to try new things, and can be signs of things to come (they were the first to readily adopt Pay TV, DVD, Paid internet sites, etc...)

I refer you to this thread where I discuss porn.
The stripping apparently happens in the "Lounge" in the Heuther. I imagine that professional status is when you do it for a living instead of a one-time thing like the amateur nights.

some of the biggest players in the economy (company wise) are in the porn business ... for example ge and time warner ...
(i watched a little expose on the porn business a bit back)
there's obviously a demand for the stuff so ... up we come with the supply
it seems very complex too ... there are so many different levels of porn ... and as we start to be more and more comfortable with the whole "sex is for pleasure, and that's ok" idea .. the industry itself becomes slightly more legitimized .. still, there are those lurking around the fringes with somewhat .... questionable practices and/or offerings

Mel: the stripping has been going on there for many years, so I don't think the construction had anything to do with it.
I'm not even going to bother to delve into the whole porn/stripping/prostitution conversation, most of it is just so unfounded and the conversation could go astray way too easily.

So what happens if YOU want to pick up the stripper, Thai? Leave your normal self at home?
Posted by Romer @ 03/25/2004 01:12 AM EST
i feel i should say something in here, seeing as the events of the night did involve me to some extent.
i just can't think of anything worthwhile to say
*tries to think of anything*
thai, don't talk to girls that are picking up your friends.
Posted by shawnathan @ 03/25/2004 01:31 AM EST
I don't think I'd want to pick up a stripper in the first place. Who knows what's been there!
Posted by Rayne @ 03/25/2004 01:39 AM EST
isn't that being a little prejudiced against the strippers ... you can strip without being ... uh ... contaminated by other ppl ... leers can do nothing under a "you can look, but you can't touch" policy ...
however ... if you are the type that has to strip or wants to strip ... often the next steps aren't as big as if you were one who did not
Posted by melpie @ 03/25/2004 09:31 AM EST
Ever hear of those strip clubs where you can pay extra to "touch"?
Posted by Rayne @ 03/25/2004 02:21 PM EST
Nope.
Posted by Romer @ 03/25/2004 02:53 PM EST
hear? i've experienced! er .. i mean ...
no.
Posted by melpie @ 03/25/2004 04:18 PM EST
hmmm...on which end, Mel?
Posted by Rayne @ 03/25/2004 04:40 PM EST
oh you'd like to know ... but i'm not going to tell you
hmph!
it's my little secret
Posted by melpie @ 03/25/2004 07:22 PM EST
I also don't think I'd ever want to pick up a stripper. I mean sure it would be interesting to have one TRY to pick me up. But the idea of being with a girl that many many other men have seen naked is not appealing to me.
And Shawn, if she wasn't an idiot she wouldn't have tried to take a swing at Thai... I mean come on, it's not like he really insulted her.
I think most strip clubs in Canada allow you to pay extra to touch. In the US that is a completely different story.
Posted by Mike @ 03/25/2004 08:12 PM EST
Mike, I think her trying to hit Thai had a lot to do with her being completely drunk.
Posted by Romer @ 03/26/2004 12:11 AM EST
so if you're violent when you're drunk ... it's ok?
so if she's 27 and still a stripper ... does that mean she's making a career of it?
Posted by melpie @ 03/26/2004 09:40 AM EST
The fact that she got violent over nothing should be indicative of her nature, drunk or not. It's inexcusable.
She's probably made a career out of stripping for a while. I mean, at 27 her shelf life's almost over right?

Here's a picture of my lip.
Posted by Rayne @ 03/27/2004 08:57 PM EST
Reminds me of those live surgery shows on TLC... The close-up makes it hard to see it's a lip.
