06/04/2004 Archived Entry: "The Pill"

Been wanting to try a sleeping pill for a while now, just to see what it would be like. Over the weekend I was sleeping at ridiculous hours and getting up around 3 in the afternoon both days, so come Sunday night, I decided that it would be best to sleep at a normal time. Midnight, pop sleeping pill, play dota. 1:30 go to sleep.

Hilarity ensues.

I get up and go to my 8:30 Database class, come home at 9:30 to break my fast (!!), go back to school at 11, nap in the room my 11:30 class is at, end up sleeping through to 12:30, missing the entire lecture. Go off to the SLC (Student Life Center) to take a nap before my 1:30 class. Sleep THREE hours until 3:30. Get up, feel stupid, go off to do some weights, come home have dinner. Print my notes for the night class. Discover that I have an assignment due in 30 mins. Decide to take a late. Go to night class, sleep through 90 mins of it.

So yeah.

I'm not sure exactly what was going on, but I was definately tired all day long. Perhaps the pill forces you to sleep X number of hours even if it's broken up over several sessions in the day. Or maybe the night's forced sleep was "artificial" and not as satisfying as falling asleep naturally is.

Yikes. I thought sleeping pills were prescription medicine? (Never taken any, never been tempted to.)

My younger brother had some for a while to help him sleep -- I'm not sure if it was because his second dose of Ritalin kept him awake at night, or if it was simply because he couldn't sleep..
Either way, the thing just wreaks havoc on the body, as you clearly experienced :)

Maybe you should try taking *half* of one, or switch to NyQuil. :P

when you napped through your 11:30 class in the room that it was in, when you woke up was there a different class in there? b/c that will definitely illicit a few giggles from me.

Or you could try taking Gravol...that's what Kev takes when he goes from working days to nights. It's what the pharmacist I work with recommends.

The rustling from people leaving the classroom was enough to get me to wake up. Though I do remember waking up at one point and noticed that it was now my class and not the one I walked in on.

NyQuil? I've had Gravol recommended by Andy several times, but I dunno about taking drugs for their side effects alone. Seems weird.

I think I'm done with drug induced sleep anyways, it was just something interesting to try.

NyQuil is the best sleep inducer I've ever had. Much better than the specialized drugs, though I admit I've never had any prescription sleep aids.

My mom takes Gravol if she can't sleep and it knocks her right out. It works for most people. Not me though. I'll just have warm milk with cinnamon and that'll get me sleepy. You don't want to see me on Gravol. Or Robaxacet....
