09/01/2004 Archived Entry: "Size matters"

This is my desktop (actual size). I run my pc at a resolution of 1600x1200 and much too often find that to be insufficient to do some of the things I want to do. When coding, for example, I like to have the text editor open, a browswer open to reference pages, and the console. Even at my resolution, it's impossible to have all these 3 things opened wide enough to view their entire content(s?). Most things need 600 width resolution, so you can only expect to accomodate 2 windows side-by-side. While I realise I should be closing the windows that I'm not using at any given moment, I just think it's really nice to be able to look at something without having to click around.

I think 1600x2400 would be spectacular! Widescreen is definately the way to go, I can't believe they're only a recent development. Sorta like Bottom Freezer Refrigerators, it makes so much sense it's odd that it hadn't been invented before. Who stacks their windows vertically anyways? Alas, most decently priced LCD screens don't even do 1600x1200. The solution is to get another 19 incher that can do 16x12 and do dual monitor. But it just wouldn't be the same. I await impatiently the day a LCD screen can do 1600x2400 and will cost less than 1k. Until then, I sorta just wonder how the hell I lived with the cluttered desktop that was un-tabbed browsing.

All you need is a feature like Expose in OS X and all your problems are solved =)

Get something like Window Blinds where the windows can be minimized on screen. Although window blinds sucks so you might want to look for a different program

I have a 15inch box of a monitor. Its not even a VGA, its a VGM. The top resolution is probably closer to a 1992 game boy than to anything in existene today. Enjoy the fact you have a decent monitor...and be thankful you don't have my monitor.

Well, I had two 1280x1024 monitors at work last term, and I found that it would quite sufficient. One side was e-mail and the other was work. I find that I don't need to have more than two things at a time, code/reference, e-mail/browser, e-mail/code, it's really not that bad...
