"We can't see anything wrong with you" Those are probably the worse words to hear! I hate going to see a medical person (very rarely, btw) and being told that everything is fine. I only go when I have specific, and maybe dire, symptoms that need looking after and more than once have the doctors said those words to me.

It's infuriating because you KNOW that there's something clearly wrong with you and it's such a let down that they can't give a specific explanation as to what's going on. It's also not reassuring at all because while all the tests might say "normal", you feel everything EXCEPT normal and your heart might burst at any second yet the doctors tell you that there's nothing to be done because nothing's wrong. We need tricorders.

and if the tricorder said normal? What would you say then?

Personally, I hate going to doctors because I don't trust their diagnosis. With all the complexities of the human body, they have to resort to a process of elimination to determine what you have. So it basically becomes nothing more than an educated guess. Sometimes this "guess" may be ameliorated by supporting evidence from different tests, but that still leaves me pessimistic.

Even with a tricorder, you would still have to rely on the doctor's judgement for the interpretation of the data.

Dan, so then who should tell you what's wrong with you? At least the doctors can narrow it down a bit, I trust that it's more than anyone else could do for us. Better to be treated for something you "could" have than not be treated at all (of course this statement is null and void if the treatment might harm you if you don't have it, heh). Just start watching House, TV makes me believe they'll get it right eventually =)

I already know what's wrong with me. I don't need highly paid people to point it out...:P!

Funny you mention this as I had a little incident in Hawaii that really didn't get resolved to this day. When I have the time I'll go back to the doctors. But I know what he/she will say. I see nothing wrong, drink lots of fluids. Are they farking mental? If nothing was wrong, why would I see them! Heck, I had to pay for a doctors visit in Hawaii just so that they can tell me I'm fine.

And I'm not surprised. I TA a lot of retards in my lab class. A lot of them aspiring to go to med school. You see, I don't know which of my students are going to med school until I lay the smack down with my prelab quizzes, exposing their stupidity and have them whine that they need a higher mark cause they're trying to get into med school.

Too farking bad I say. Here's a novel idea, study harder! These are the people going into med school, asshats who coast through university by slipping through the cracks.

For those who have a general idea of the medicine, I see their frustration with doctors...and I do agree that doctors are stupid as hell many times...for example...a cough that lasts 6 months cannot possibly be "just a cough"...there's something greater at work there...but at the same time..I'd prefer to turn to someone who knows more about a condition than I do because it could be something I did not think it could be...who knows what kind of bacteria are in my system...I'd rather spend those 5 minutes in an office getting checked out to ensure that I'm not dying...or whatever...especially since I don't really know much about different ailments. :) My two cents...

Hey Gosia, where did you go and only spend 5 minutes in the office? I want to go see that doctor!! I agree with Thai on this one - a tricorder needs to be our next big medical purchase as a country :P

I tend to get in pretty quickly at my doctor's office... but then again, I've seen my doctor so much we're on a first name basis. I think she just likes the fact that I am putting her kids through college all on my own.

And Thai... you have trust issues *smiles*

I have trust issues? Elaborate...on msn!

Anyways, I would never pretend to know more than a Doctor does. I know more about what's wrong with me and the symptoms I'm feeling because I'm the one occupying this body. But I would definately trust that a doctor can give a name to the cause of my symptoms than I can.

I'm sure all of your symptoms can easily be summed up into some psychological problem. The brain is a messed up thing, it can play tricks on you :p
