Silent Hill is confusing. Here's my interpretation of the film, everything gets spoiled.

There are 3 dimentions: normal, fog, dark. The Reaper can only affect one world up from where he is. So if he's in Dark he can't interact with Normal, but if he's in Fog he can interact with all 3. Sensing Alessa's anger and pain after the rape and the bbq, the reaper makes her a deal "give me a foothold on this world, and I will give you vengeance" and thus using Alessa as a medium, Silent Hill and its cultists are plunged into the Fog Dimension. The problem is that The Demon/Alessa can't penetrate The Church since it's protected by God.

After 20-ish years of frustration the demon decides it needs an independent outside agent to help it gain access to the church ergo it splits off Alessa's good side into its own being: Sharon. Sharon's role (unknown to her) is to bring said independent outside agent into Silent Hill. Once Rose, Cybill, and Sharon arrive they all make the jump to foggy dimension (including their cars) via Sharon being something of a dual-dimentional creation. So using Rose's love for Sharon, Alessa is able to put her essense inside of Rose. Concurrantly, Rose brings Alessa into the church where The Reaper can finally be unleashed.

Once vengeance is brought, Alessa is reunited with her "good side" and so Sharon's body is left an empty husk for The Reaper to occupy. Now having a body which can access the real world as well as having fullfilled it's obligations to Alessa, The Reaper is free to roam all 3 dimensions outside of Silent Hill as signified by the "moat" around SH dissapearing at the end. Rose's imprisonement in Fog Dimension is a sort of Collateral Damage as the Reaper is not willing to let Rose out and allow her to reveal the secrets of Silent Hill to the real world.

Also: The moment after Rose bloodies the church and turns around holding the knife while the bed rises out of hell...I pictured the music of "Mortal Kombat" beginning to play. It would have been awesome.

Pretty good interpretation from the movie. Though it deviates a bit from the game based on your assessment.

Did they ever mention why Alessa was possessed by the demon? I don't remember and I think that may lead to a bit of confusion to the moviegoers.

I don't like how people are calling the demon the "Reaper". But i guess it's cause of the film. It's Samael damn it!

the film never mentions a Samael, ..and...isn't that the Devil's name?

Alessa was possessed because she was raped and burned and got really really angry at life and thus made a pact with the reaper.

Daniel, you obviously haven't attened chick flicks with Gosia. Go see She's the man and tell me its better, or how about The Ice Princess, talk abot out of touch with reality... Well, the script is probably better than Silent Hills. :)

Gigli, like come on...

Samael is the devil but is the name of the demon which Alessa contains in her womb. Metatron is the opposing force used to prevent Silent Hill from going totally into the shits. Though he was never used in the film.

Play the game, it's so much better. Especially SH2:Restless Dreams.

The games are so much better! Play the games! They're even for Xbox!

I don't waste my time on stupid movies...so no...I didn't see "She's the Man", "Gigli", or "The Ice Princess"...poor, poor Kim...:P!! Don't let your gf abuse you that way...;).

I remember watching you play the game Kim...did look TONS better than this movie.

I didn't see Gigli either, I don't like Ben Affleck.

What has this world come to? How, in the name of Samuel, do these movies make it to the big screen? Producers have way too much money...they no longer know what to do with it, so they sponsor HORRRRRRIBLE movies. SH is definately in my top 5 of worst movies ever. (said in Comicbook store guy's voice)

Christabella only refers to Samael as "The Demon" in the movie. Which is sort of too bad.

I like your description of the movie. Trying to explain it, I have my own bias based on the games, so I wouldn't have really thought of the fog and dark sides of the town as dimensions 2 and 3. More like there's the normal Silent Hill, and then the other dimension, which alternates between fog and dark.

Man, the dark side (or "other" side) of Silent Hill in the games freaks the shit out of me. It's awesome.
