So I was asked if I thought any of my friends were ugly. Friends aren’t ugly. They can't be. Or at least they stop being ugly after we spend enough time with them. No matter how someone looks, you get “used to it” and any initial shock at their beauty (or lack thereof) eventually fades. I imagine that getting to know them causes their personality to overwhelm whatever visual impact they made at first. Most people just become “average looking” as you spend more time with them. They become part of the landscape, so to speak. We just have to remember to remember what we initially thought of their looks!

There’s also “sensory adaptation” where, as the name indicates, your senses adapt to their input. That’s why it takes a few seconds before we can see in the dark, or how we are no longer bothered by the smell of skunk in the car, or how the high pitched whine from the monitor behind me just becomes background noise.

That said, if Wii all stick together, Wii will get over this one day =`(

I find this post most bizarre.

I don't buy your "sensory adaptation" for a second. You don't get used to someone that's really ugly, you just don't befriend them...hence resulting in a circle of friends that are "visually acceptable".

What if they befriend YOU?! Are you superficial enough to not be friends with some guy just because he's ugly? Make him a movie-friend or something, no one will see in the dark.

What if they befriend me? If a person befriends me, it doesn't mean that the person has become my friend. Just apply it to high school and the one person you kept avoiding to the state of frustration.

I think our definitions of an ugly person differ in this post (my view being more extreme, I assume). Regardless, superficiality is within all of us...we're all guilty of it...whether we're conscious of it or not, it's a genetic inclination. I'm just stating that you haven't "visually adapted", you've just never befriended an ugly person (ugly per my definition).

Alright, I'm going to bite on the hiden topic; The Wii is a stupid name. I just got home from 7 hours of after-hours cleaning and a good portion of jokes were dedicated to this name change. Specifically, the female contingent working in our electronics store were thinking about what new pick up lines some of our less socially-adept patrons are going to come up with. "Would you like to come home and play with my Wii?" Or how about "I'm looking for a multiplayer game for my Wii." And it added a whole new level to our warrentee program; "You break your Wii or are in anyway unsatified with your Wii, we will replace your Wii with another one." Oh, I don't know how anyone will ever keep a straight face again, but it's one of the most shrewd and unconventional advertising techniques I've seen in a long time.
