10/25/2006 Archived Entry: "The Best Line"

I was briefly skimming some of Grant Morrison's "New X-Men" when I chanced upon what is probably the best line of dialogue ever commited to paper. Jean Grey who Wolverine just killed in a show of mercy came right back as The Phoenix to help stop Magneto (who everyone thought died 3 years ago). Knowing that he's defeated, Magneto gives up but gives Phoenix a "planetary scale seizure" which is about to kill her. Wolverine, going crazy with anger decapitates Magneto and Phoenix dies in Cyclops' (whom she recently found out was mentally cheating on her) arms where they have the BEST exchange ever.

Cyclops: "Jean, I'm so sorry about everything. I...I didn't ever mean to hurt you"
Phoenix: "Shh! Shh! I havent seen you so alive for a long time Scott...my best friend...have to go now... Live, Scott. Live. All I ever did was die on you."

Her words are just so poignant, so amazing and so succintly capture the entirety of their relationship that just typing them out make me feel like..like..like I should be able to write that well too, damn it!

Of course, the Magneto who was decapitated was revealed to be yet another fake Magneto, and Phoenix was briefly resurected for a 5 month period. BOO!

Is it jumping the shark, or has it already?

Yeah, I like the line..crazy eh?

X-Men can't really jump the shark, new writers can always come in to clean things up and make them exciting again!

Maybe liking that line is just Thai's way of saying that he found all the women he dated disappointing. :P
