Well, that goes to show that you never know who is reading what and how they are interpreting it. This whole experience has really put me on edge for the last few days and I’m currently at the point where I’m paying way too much attention to what I’m writing (and submitting) for fear of being struck by lightning.
The strange thing is that this all came to a head NOW when the incident actually happened 6 months ago and was of basically no consequence since I didn’t get the job anyways. I’d be interested in knowing all the background activity that went on before I was called in, like how Rayne was associated to my full name. The ethics committee actually had a go at this too!
I always assume that only my friends pay any REAL attention to this site and that any random people would only glance at it for a bit and never come back. Never had I thought that something written here would actually come back to haunt me somehow.
This is all Stephen’s fault.

You really have no idea how tired you are until you go to lie down and don't get up for over twelve hours. I think this week was one of the more hectic ones in a while. School had been pretty lax for the first couple of weeks and then all of a sudden I had 3 co-op postings to look after and three different assignments. I don't think I went to bed before 3am a single night last week. Crazy.
That said, school's going alright so far. Though I haven't been this stressed about school in a long time. Not that this school term is harder than any of the previous ones per se, it's just that I'm expected to remember so much material from previous courses. Classes have always needed some previous material but it seems much more like we're expected to know old stuff without them giving us any kind of review of it this term. That scares me.

All writers have to straddle that line between writing something that's too personal and ..erm..just personal enough.
I don't really speak about personal things - like emotions - here (or elsewhere) but sometimes, like right now, it's oh-so-tempting to compose something, scream it out at the top of my lungs for the world to hear and then keep walking along like nothing happened.
So here goes, *takes deep breath* ... nah.

For those who don't know, Go is the oldest and most complex board game in the world; at first glance it seems a lot like a more complex Othello.
For about a week now I've been wanting to buy a Go board. At the mall, I looked in The Bay, Zellers, Dufferin Games, and Athletes World; none of them had a board. Aside from the Internet, I really don't know where else to look for a Go board now.
Why all this sudden interest in Go? Basically because I've been listening to the music from Hikaru No Go; the music makes Go seem like the most EPIC game one can ever play; putting a stone down is like a life changing decision.
Anyways, go here and here to learn more about Go.
Here are some nice quotes about Go that I've pulled up:
"Go was studied by Japan's warrior class and eventually institutionalized in four "Go houses," where families developed and passed down Go techniques in the same way that other Japanese families developed and passed down techniques of sword-making or the samurai code."
"In ancient China, Go was one of the Four Accomplishments that were required of nobility before they could be considered properly civilized, the other three being poetry, painting, and music."
"In China, Korea, and Japan, Go has a respect and popularity on a par with major sports events here. There are magazines, newspaper columns, 24-hour television programming, and professional tournaments with purses in the hundreds of thousands of dollars devoted to the game. Professional Go players enjoy prominent celebrity status."
"In fact, learning to play Go is something like learning to speak a foreign language. You can absorb enough in a few lessons to get along, but it will take years of study to become fluent."

I think it's very weird in movies/teevee when two people who don't speak each other's language meet each other. It almost always turns out to be the english speaking protagonist who begins to start talking slowly to try to establish some kind of understanding while the one speaking the "foreign tongue" continues blabbing incoherently as if he/she had no idea that the protagonist didn't understand.
The protagonist always ends up teaching the foreigner English instead of the foreigner trying to teach the protagonist his language. You always see the English speaking character say his name, point to himself and then point to the foreigner expectantly. Never is the other guy smart enough to first realize that different languages are being spoken to start saying his name, pointing to himself and then pointing to the english speaking character. It's as if the characters KNOW that they are in an english speaking movie and can't learn the Other Language for the audience's sake. Cheap, cheap, cheap!
Go watch ST:TNG's "Darmok" for the best representation of a natural linguistic give-and-take ever written.

Remember the Good Ol Days when The Learning Channel was all about educational programming? I used to watch it all the time to know about ancient civilizations and whatnot. With the coming of Discovery Channel, I guess TLC had to change its focus a little. They've caught the "reality TV" train, except their shows are no where near as sleazy and insipid as the ones you can catch on the other networks.
I just started really watching the shows but already I love "What Not To Wear" and "Clean Sweep". The former is about two people who are given fashion disasters and make them over, complete with a 5000$ shopping spree! I'd go on the show just to have that much to spend on clothes, imagine all the outfits you could get for five grand! "Clean Sweep" is the show where an organizer (how does one become a professional organizer??), a designer and a carpenter remake extremely cluttered rooms into liveable places; the focus of the show tho is usually around convincing the couples to get rid of 1/2 their stuff. I definately know some people who could be featured on "What Not To Wear" and there are some houses I've been in that could use a clean sweep.
Anyways, both these "reality" shows are extremely entertaining AND educational. I really enjoy seeing how different the people and homes look by the end. Don't forget to watch "Trading Places: $100 000" on Oct. 15 when the crew gets 100 grand to remake a home in whatever way they want! Imagine the possibilities!

Contrary to what others may think, I find I have a lot more free time during the school term than the work term. Work requires 40 hours plus 5 for travelling each week while school only needs 15 and 2. And of course, school doesn't start until 11:30 or 2:30 so I can sleep at my right time and still get plenty of rest before having to be somewhere, even with unexpected guests dropping by at all times of the night!
In general, I get a lot more sleep here than in Ottawa, and while in Ottawa I usually got more sleep during weekdays than weekends. Funny how that works eh? The amount of sleep I get is inversely proportional to how late I stay out.
The problem though, is that I often FEEL like I have less time because of all the assignments and whatnot hanging ove my head. Most people are way too stressed by their homework and probably waste more time worrying about it than actually doing it (myself included), but really it's not that bad.
The one thing I find I have less time for now is updating this thing, I have a little less "me time" (and God knows I need tons of that!) here because there's always someone around and something going on that it's a little harder to come up with something to say here.

How do you know you can trust someone with secrets? I know that when I tell somebody something I always expect them to tell at least one other person, not because I don't trust them but because that's the nature of secrets. Anything that I don’t want “out there” I usually try to keep to myself…just in case.
One thing that I sometimes forget when telling someone something is where that person’s “loyalty” lies. We don’t even have to be talking about secrets here. If you say something to a friend about someone else, there’s no guarantee that your friend won’t turn around and tell that other person because they want that person to know what was said. Sometimes you tell someone something that you think should be kept hush hush but the recipient of your secret doesn’t necessarily think it’s a big deal and fails to keep it on the down low. Maybe you’re telling someone about your goals and how you plan to reach them but then they’re secretly after the same thing and they can now sabotage you somehow. And be careful with asking questions! If you ask A about B I’ll bet that B will know that you asked A those questions; it’s actually pretty easy to manipulate certain people like that. Just ask the right person the right questions.
Remember, information is power and you should be careful who you give power to. Whatever you say can and will be used against you eventually. Trust no one!

So, first class on the first day of class. I get to class 5 minutes late at St.Jerome’s 3012. I sit down trying to not attract too much attention. I recognized one person, Malcolm. Anyways, I’m there for about five minutes when I see that all the students have a handout that says “Calculus 3” on it. I’m supposed to be in C&O 350. I escape through the back door, again, trying to not attract too much attention. At the library I use one of the computers to look up my schedule and sure enough C&O had moved to room 110 in some building called “Rod Clouts Hall”. I have never heard of RCH so off I went to the SLC (Student Life Center) to find a campus map. RCH turns out to be one of the engineering buildings, but on the map a HUGE section of campus is labeled RCH. I ended up wandering through and around most of the engineering part of campus before coming to building “R. L. Clouts”; The Submarine itself! By the time I found room 110 it was about 10 minutes before lectures ended. I poked my head into the room, saw some people and left so I could be on time for at least one class on my first day.

Sigh, it's sad to think of the summer as "last term" already!
Dune: House Atreides, Dune: House Harkonnen, Dune: House Corrino. Good books though they're not as good or as smart as the originals.
Saturn Rukh: My fourth book by Robert Forward. Smart and imaginative but it's way too similar in terms of plot/characters/aliens to the other books of his that I've read.
Les Trois Mousquetaires: Took me a LONG time to read it but I'm glad I did if for no other reason than knowing the TRUE story that so many movies are based on.
Tigana: Guy Gavriel Kay has amazing prose and his characters are always smart and interesting, my favorite book by him so far.
The Manticore, World of Wonders: Books two and three of The Deptford Trilogy. Book one is my fave but only because I found the main character more interesting. These two books are just as well written.

More moving and packing! Seems like this’ll never end. I’d like to say that this has been the best term I’ve had since the summer after OAC; it was fun, satisfying and a blast in general. I got a chance to make some new friends, reaffirm old friendships, and rebuild some smoldering bridges. Between the co-ops, the locals and the family I was kept busy every weekend and most weeknights; the upcoming school term will be hard pressed to keep up this level of fun.
With that said, a big “Thank You” to all of you who helped to make this term such an exciting one! You know who you are!
I’ll see all you Ottawans in 4 months and you UW’ers in about 24 hours.
I think we’ll end this here before I get uncharacteristically sentimental.

So I poured boiling water right out of a kettle and onto my hand yesterday. It hurt. A lot. As I was seething in pain, an interesting list of remedies was rattled off to me: warm water, cold water, ice, aloe, toothpaste and…soya sauce! I dunno, I’ll try anything, but being obsessively compulsed to constantly have clean hands makes the idea of rubbing soya sauce into them very unappealing.
After looking up some First Aid on the Internet (aaah, the Internet). I ended up dropping my hand in a sink full of cold water for an hour or so. It was very soothing except when I took my hand out and it would eventually dry and sting horribly again.
Anyways, my hand seems ok now; no blisters – which I think are superbly gross. This whole experience has taught me one thing, that I need to know some First-Aid or at least some really basic First-Aid so that the next time my manual dexterity fails me I won’t be going around to several people asking for advice before doing something about the unbearable pain.

Sometimes I just don't feel like writing something, sometimes I have nothing to write about, sometimes I don't have the time for it, and sometimes, like last night, I just fall asleep at 7pm without having put up what I wrote!
I was talking to my dad the other day, we were reminscing about our road trip down to Florida a few years back and how it'd be fun to do so again. I told him about how four girls I knew were all off in Europe for a whole month this summer. Going for a whirlwind tour of Europe somehow just seems like the thing to do. It's weird, I can easily picture two girl-friends going off for a month to Europe, but two guy-friends...? Can't picture it. I'd need a group of three, at least.
Anyways, my dad thought Europe was a wonderful idea and suggested that we ALL went after my graduation. We could stay in Sweden with family that we have there and they could show us around to all the nice, quaint, little spots. Eu...NOT what I was thinking.
Sure hanging out with parents and such is fun but what kind of nightlife could I possibly have with parents and 40+ year old cousins in tow? Not the kind I have in mind!

It seems like I'm almost always late. It's not like I do it on purpose to be "fashionably late", it just ends up that way. I think part of the reason is because I'm "reality impaired", I think I can meet up with you at 8 but it's probably around 8:30 before I show up; I just give myself too much credit for being able to be somewhere quickly.
Another thing is that I never ever seem to rush to go anywhere. Last Friday, I got up around 8:10; when most people would rush through their shower and grab something to eat on the way to work I sat down had some breakfast, a mug of hot tea, stared out into the backyard for a bit, had another mug of hot tea then took a nice long, drawn out shower. The thing is, I just don't care whether I'm late or not. I move at my pace the rest of the world should too!
Anyways, it's pretty funny that I'm never on-time but it's probably more annoying to others than I think it is. Darryl said that it was my "style" to be late and I'd just like to point out that it's not done on purpose - it just happens.
Check out the poll I just added "for fun". [more]
