The Long Road

I was briefly skimming some of Grant Morrison's "New X-Men" when I chanced upon what is probably the best line of dialogue ever commited to paper. Jean Grey who Wolverine just killed in a show of mercy came right back as The Phoenix to help stop Magneto (who everyone thought died 3 years ago). Knowing that he's defeated, Magneto gives up but gives Phoenix a "planetary scale seizure" which is about to kill her. Wolverine, going crazy with anger decapitates Magneto and Phoenix dies in Cyclops' (whom she recently found out was mentally cheating on her) arms where they have the BEST exchange ever.

Cyclops: "Jean, I'm so sorry about everything. I...I didn't ever mean to hurt you"
Phoenix: "Shh! Shh! I havent seen you so alive for a long time Scott...my best friend...have to go now... Live, Scott. Live. All I ever did was die on you."

Her words are just so poignant, so amazing and so succintly capture the entirety of their relationship that just typing them out make me feel like..like..like I should be able to write that well too, damn it!

Of course, the Magneto who was decapitated was revealed to be yet another fake Magneto, and Phoenix was briefly resurected for a 5 month period. BOO!

You were so young, so cute, so naive, so tired, and ever so confused. I just couldn’t help myself. When you presented me with this opportunity, I simply didn’t have the will power to say no. I know I should have; I was fully aware of what was going on and yet didn’t stop it. It’s not like I have some excuse like being tired or drugged up. Comic books have taught me better than this!

You had a long day, the only person working the cash AND the customer service counter with long line ups at both. When you handed me 10.01$ instead of 0.01$, I knew I should have set you straight, but instead I just kept my mouth shut. Even when you said you thought something was wrong but couldn’t put your finger on it, I pretended not to know. Oh how I’m paying for it now. The guilt has been eating away at the very core of my soul for hours! You can rest assured, Canadian Tire Girl, that I couldn’t rest assured at all last night.

is a fantasy novel told from the point of the author who relates how this story changed his life. It’s about how he’s reworking the original story to be more interesting and better paced. Along the way we meet his family, learn about his domestic problems and his struggles with becoming a writer; a lot of everyday concerns that we “normal” people can relate to interspersed with segments of high adventure.

The writer through his own story becomes very likeable and it’s fascinating to see how one story has affected his entire life. And you know what? It’s all a lie! There is no “real” version of The Princess Bride, no real S. Mortgenstern, and no real Cliffs of Insanity. I was extremely disappointed to discover that a Princess Bride’s framing device to be nothing more than a framing device. That Goldman’s haughty and brilliant wife was nothing but a figment of his imagination. Most of all, it was sad to see yet another fantasy story requiring an “in” to the unfamiliar.

What do you guys think? It was a random idea I came up with (I think) one day. The picture's kinda crappy...not sure how to take a "good" picture, but I love the concept.

This video from the BBC on Blue Whales is probably the best thing available on youtube, or perhaps even all of the internets! There's just something cool and primal about large animals, that's why we have a dinosaur fixation and probably why we've hunted just about anything bigger than us to extinction. Blue whales, being the biggest things ever, are thus the coolest things ever. The best shots in this video are the top-down ones, seeing their entire giant bodies gliding through the water reminds me of subs and it'd be really great if we got some shots of tiny little humans swimming along beside these great beasts, for comparison's sake.
