Day 11 - Dam and Xiling

Our first morning on the boat, we took an excursion to the 3 Gorges Dam. The thing is huge! But sadly, we never got any true sense of its scale since visitors aren't allowed on or in the dam. We only got to observe it from a few hundred meters away, which really takes away from how immense it really is. You can see in some pictures that trucks on the dam are nearly unrecognizable.

Next to the dam was a little museum and observation platform. The museum building was about 1/3 museum and 2/3 gift shop. The platform offered some nice views, though.

In the afternoon, the boat set sail and we passed the first of the three Gorges, Xiling. It's amazingly beautiful and neither words nor pictures can really do it justice. Suffice it to say that we probably took more pictures of the 3 gorges than anything else in China, but pictures of the landscape are just that, you really have to be there surrounded by the mountains to truly appreciate it.

On the boat, we started hanging out with the only other person under 30 (40?), Karine. We were all dressed up because it was the "Captain's Soiree" where we met the captain and had free champagne. It's also around this time that Etienne discovered the widescreen function on his camera. EVERYTHING looks better in widescreen. That night, members of the crew put up a little dance show for us; it was called "love in Sheena". It was kitsch but full of heart. <3
